The Foundation of Cold Chain Performance: Effective Insulation

In July 2026, temperatures above seasonal averages across many parts of Türkiye once again brought cooling demand and energy consumption into focus. With temperatures reaching 46.8°C in Cizre, maintaining stable indoor conditions in cold storage facilities became even more critical, particularly in warmer climate regions.

In cold chain applications, the key challenge is not only generating low temperatures, but also maintaining them with minimal energy loss. The thermal performance of the building envelope therefore plays a central role in supporting the efficient operation of cooling systems.

As the temperature difference between indoor and outdoor environments increases, so does heat gain through walls, roofs, and floors. Inadequate or poorly designed insulation can increase the amount of heat entering the refrigerated space, placing additional demand on cooling systems. This may lead to higher energy consumption and operating costs while making it more difficult to maintain the required internal temperature consistently.

For this reason, the energy performance of cold storage facilities should not be assessed solely on the capacity of cooling equipment. Building envelope design, insulation selection based on climate conditions and target storage temperatures, and continuity of insulation at application details are equally important to overall system performance.

A 2022 study covering climate data from all 81 provinces of Türkiye also showed that optimum insulation thickness in cold storage facilities varies depending on local climate, target storage temperature, and insulation material. Under the conditions analysed, shorter payback periods for insulation investments were observed particularly in the Aegean and Mediterranean regions.

Thermal insulation should therefore be considered not simply as a layer within the building envelope, but as a fundamental system component that helps limit heat gain, support energy efficiency, and maintain more stable temperature conditions throughout the cold chain.

Sustaining insulation performance requires the right material to be combined with appropriate design details and correct installation. In applications such as cold storage facilities and refrigerated vehicles, material selection should consider not only thermal performance, but also moisture and condensation control, mechanical strength, fire safety, and installation conditions.

During periods of high outdoor temperatures, maintaining target temperatures in cold storage facilities depends on more than powerful cooling equipment. Effective thermal insulation helps reduce heat gain through the building envelope, lower cooling loads, manage energy consumption, and support more stable indoor conditions.
