Common Misconceptions About Sound Insulation and the Right Solutions

Noise is one of the most common comfort-related problems encountered in buildings today. Conversations coming from neighboring apartments, footsteps heard from the floor above, or heavy traffic noise from the street can significantly reduce quality of life. Despite this, many people assume that having insulation or an external thermal insulation system on their building will eliminate all such sounds. In reality, sound insulation is not an issue that can be solved with a single material or a single application. If there is a weakness at any point in the building system, or if the wrong products are selected, the resulting performance will inevitably be insufficient.

Rock Wool Is Effective, but Sound Insulation Requires a Holistic Approach

Building façades have large surface areas and, much like the sail of a boat collecting wind as it moves across the sea, these surfaces also receive sound waves traveling through the outdoor environment. For this reason, applying the right type of insulation to the exterior façade is extremely important. The type and quality of the external insulation system directly affect acoustic performance. Thanks to its fibrous structure, rock wool can provide both thermal and acoustic insulation and is particularly effective at reducing high-frequency noise. However, using rock wool alone is not enough; the system must be designed with the correct thickness and density and installed in accordance with technical requirements. At the same time, covering only the exterior façade with rock wool does not provide complete sound insulation. Unless party walls, floors, and ceilings are insulated according to the same principles, sound will continue to enter through other weak points in the building.

Sound always finds the weakest part of a building. Incorrectly selected windows, gaps around doors, roller shutter boxes, wall junctions, floors, and ceilings are among the most critical areas through which sound can travel. Even a single gap or inadequately insulated area can prevent noise from being fully blocked, regardless of how high-quality the materials used on the exterior façade may be. For this reason, successful sound insulation requires the entire building envelope to be considered as a complete system.

There Is Insulation, but the Noise Is Still Inside: Why?

External noise is a frequent source of complaints, particularly in homes located in densely populated areas or along streets with heavy traffic. Many people wonder why noise remains a problem even after installing rock wool exterior insulation. The main reason is that sound insulation cannot be limited to the façade alone. A living space should be treated as though it were wrapped as one complete package: the exterior façade, internal partition walls, floors, and ceilings must all be considered together. Window systems should preferably use double or triple glazing, frameprofiles should have wide multi-chamber designs, and, where possible, even ventilation equipment should be designed or adapted to support acoustic insulation.

For external façade insulation to be effective in terms of sound insulation, the wall structure behind the system should also be sufficiently thick and ideally consist of wide, multi-chambered or multi-layered construction. Building walls as double-wall assemblies with an air cavity between them can provide particularly high levels of acoustic performance. Unless these structural details are properly supported, the exterior façade alone cannot provide adequate noise control.

Why Does Floor Insulation Often Fail to Deliver the Expected Performance?

Problems originating from floors are generally referred to as impact noise. Sounds generated by activities such as walking or moving furniture can be particularly disturbing to occupants on the floor below. Standard underlay materials used beneath laminate flooring may provide some initial benefit, but over time they can become compressed and thinner, eventually losing their effectiveness. As a result, they are generally insufficient for achieving significant reductions in impact noise.

The correct solution is to eliminate direct contact between the screed and the building structure by installing a floating floor system. In a system incorporating rock wool, the screed essentially sits within an acoustically isolated layer, allowing a significant proportion of impact-generated sound to be absorbed and reduced. It is also important to place impact-absorbing materials beneath service pipes running through the floor. In addition, installing a suspended ceiling creates an air cavity between the structural ceiling and the suspended ceiling, helping to significantly reduce noise transmitted from the floor above.

When used with the correct density, thickness, and installation method, rock wool is an extremely effective material for sound insulation. However, focusing on a single surface is not sufficient to achieve successful acoustic insulation. The entire building envelope—including the façade, walls, floors, ceilings, and window systems—must be considered as one integrated system. Sound insulation can deliver truly effective results only through this holistic approach.
